Waverly Belmont PTO founded the Walk/Bike Program, titled (WB)2, in 2015. (WB)2 was designed as part of the PTO for the students of Waverly Belmont Elementary. It is in clear alignment with the Board’s Mission. The Executive Board shared common belief that many youth would benefit from the added physical activity and the comradery built by walking or biking to school in groups. Determined to make a difference, the PTO decided to develop a Walk/Bike program open to any and all students from the school.
The Waverly Belmont Backpack Program offers a weekend supply of nutritious meals and snacks for students - completely free of charge. The program is intended to help those children who may not have enough food to eat at home. Every bag will include 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 drinks and 2 snacks. The bags are distributed every Friday when school is in session as well as the last day before a school break.
UniCycle is school uniform recycling program that orchestrates the collection and redistribution of outgrown, gently-used clothing to provide Standard School Attire (SSA) to Metro Nashville Public School students who need it. Volunteers collect school uniform clothing in participating schools, then redistribute it to other MNPS students, primarily though the Homeless Education Resource Office for families in transition (HERO Program). Most schools in the Metro Nashville Public School system require a basic uniform of collared, solid-color shirts and khaki, navy blue or black pants, shorts, skirts or dresses. Students bring their outgrown SSA items to school and the clothing is corralled in a designated UniCycle laundry basket. Volunteers collect the basket when full and clothes are carefully screened, cleaned, organized and then sent home to students in need, per request of the HERO staff or other MNPS personnel. Efficient collection and redistribution at the school level keeps things quicker and easier for parents and students on both ends of the recycle stream.
WATCH D.O.G.S.® (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative father involvement program offered by the National Center for Fathering in which Harbor Heights has enthusiastically adopted. This program focuses on safety and education by using the positive influence of fathers and father-figures for a two-fold purpose: (1) to provide an unobtrusive fathering presence, and (2) to provide a positive and active role-model for students at the school. Fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers and uncles are asked to spend at least one day at their student's school volunteering. They will support the school through monitoring the school entrance, assisting with unloading and loading of buses and cars, monitoring the lunch room, or helping in the classroom with a teacher's guidance either working one-on-one or in small groups. Today thousands of school programs world-wide participate in WATCH D.O.G.S.® helping to engage men, inspire children, reduce bullying and enhance the educational environment at school.
